Multimedia "Small Bites" on Instagram

I capture a ton of great audio when I'm working on an article or a video project, and then I throw most of it out. It's not that the audio is unusable, there's just a lot of extra stuff that I have to edit away to get to the main point, or story, of a piece.

"Small Bites" were created because it pains me to hear a great little story (usually a tangent in a broader conversation), a quote, or some music, and then find that I have to throw it out later.

Bites are short, one minute multimedia pieces that I share on Instagram. Most are audio with one photo, but I'm expanding into short video clips as well. Here are a few of my favorites.

Portraits of Christy's "Little Man"

Kids are so much fun for photojournalism-style shoots! I had a blast with my friend Christy and her son, "Little Man", who quickly began showing-off his fitness routine! Here's a few of my favorite shots from our afternoon together. My favorites are the more artistic black and white shots, of course, but Christy received my standard batch of selects... which includes both color and b&w images.

2nd Annual Haunted Holly Springs Tour

On October 21st, Phillip Knecht and Andrea Edgeworth of Lost River Mercantile were thrilled to introduce over 500 tourists to several of Holly Springs' 'ghosts' in the 2nd Annual "Haunted Holly" Springs tour. The tour combined antebellum architecture with spooky stories of the past, all told by (very much alive) local residents of Holly Springs.

Here's a handful of photos from the tour, plus a screen shot of my photos in the South Reporter.

Instant Mini Prints in Progress

I'm steadily finding new, and creative ways of printing my favorite photos for display. So far, I absolutely love the look of mini instant film! It doesn't work for all shots, but for images with strong contrast, the values and rich colors really pop!

I can't wait to share a handful of these fun prints with some of my favorite clients. I've already started planning the packaging (a couple of options shown below), and what they could look like as a larger set. Next up: maybe framing?

The below photos are from Creative Aging's latest Creative Arts Series program, featuring the New Ballet Ensemble & School.

New Ballet School & Creative Aging

Some of my new favorite photos came from Creative Aging's latest Senior Arts Series performance at Theatre Memphis! In September, seniors were treated to music and dance by the New Ballet Ensemble & School, whose performance encorporated a variety of different music and dramatic dance styles. I really loved the photos from this show; it was so hard to choose favorites for the blog!

"Holly Springs Stories" in Ashland

Last month, I was invited by artist Joyceann Gardner to share my Holly Springs Video Stories with the Snow Lake Shores community in Ashland, MS.

This is the second public showing of my video series on Holly Springs, and the feedback has been absolutely wonderful! I’m definitely going to consider doing more public presentations like this as things develop.

Photos of my short preliminary talk by my assistant, Alexandra Ashmead, of the Holly Springs Depot, who was kind enough to take some shots for the blog.

Southern Eatery in Eat.Drink.MS

My article in the October / November issue of “Eat. Drink. Mississippi” highlights Holly Springs’ very own Southern Eatery! Read about how Stewart’s Catering grew into a full-time restaurant, and what inspires the family's original dishes! Pick up the current issue of "Eat. Drink.", out now, at your local bookstore.

Collierville Christmas Home Tour

Some of my favorite photos from this year's "Christmas in Collierville Home Tour", shot for The Collierville Herald.

Featured below are photos from The Stratton House and The Bonk Home, two of six featured locations on the tour.

In addition to the home tour, tourists were within walking distance of Christmas events at Collierville Square, which included pictures with Santa Claus (pictured below), horse-and-carriage rides, and holiday sales at local shops.

The Crossbreed Migration

crossbreed (krôs’brēd’)
v. To produce a hybrid animal or plant by breeding two animals or two plants of different species or varieties.

migration mi·gra·tion (mī-grā’shən)
n. The moving from place to place.

In the past I've been called a "crossbreed" by those close to me. That is, someone who is neither here, nor there. That's a fairly accurate label. I'm from the south, but made a life in San Francisco. To me, that city will always be home. However, I'm not Californian. And I'm definitely not Southern. I'm somewhere in the middle.

When the second dot com blew up, I was one of hundreds of displaced artists who chose to move on. So I made a choice to go back to the south, and begin evaluating other cities for a fresh start. "The Crossbreed Migration" is a blog that collects together a few different thoughts, news articles, and photos about the places I've lived (or hope to someday live), while I move forward in my migration.
